The Soul’s Journey: Ordo Virtutum by Hildegard of Bingen

Ordo Virtutum might be called the first “opera”, or music-drama. Composed by a visionary 12th century nun, it tells of the soul’s struggle between virtue and temptation, in music of amazing originality. Vox Animae is the foremost ensemble in the world presenting the work of Hildegard of Bingen. Their performances of her music-drama, Ordo Virtutum, have been recorded, filmed and shown around the world. This is their first visit to Finland, although the 2nd time that Ordo Virtutum has been performed at SG (the first was in 1998, given by the vocal masterclass). Evelyn Tubb and Ansy Boothroyd lead a cast of 11 singers, supported by Näsin Ääni choir directed by Michael Fields.

Mystery Sonatas by Heinrich Ignaz Biber

We welcome Walter Reiter to Finland for the first time. Reiter is an internationally renowned baroque violinist and concertmaster of “The English Concert. Biber was one of the most important composers for the violin in the history of the instrument, writing one of the earliest known pieces for solo violin, the monumental passacaglia of the Mystery Sonatas. During Biber's lifetime, his music was known and imitated throughout Europe.

Songs of the Minnesangers – the German troubadours.
Oliphant is a medieval music ensemble, founded in Finland in 1995. The members are professional musicians specialised in early music. Oliphant’s repertoire consists of music from the 12th century to the polyphonic ars nova. Although the group has played a great deal of well known music from the middle ages, it has also been studying and performing a lot of forgotten songs, which members of Oliphant find very important.
